General Medicine Faculty was found in 1919, constituting a part of physics and mathematics faculty of  Irkutsk State University. In 1920 it was decided to create a separate faculty. The department was based on the organization of on-site and off-site studies, sanitation, hygiene, and pediatric faculties.
Nowadays, the educational process at the “General Medicine” faculty is being carried out at 58 faculties. Also, the faculty consists of 20 departments, where are working 35 professors, 39 assistant professors, and 200 assistants and professors. The faculty has full-time and part-time forms of study. The amount of budget places at a full-time form of study is 135, while at part-time form – 40 places.
On completion of a course, the graduates receive “Doctor of Medicine” qualification (“General Medicine” specialty).
The faculty trains qualified specialists who can apply their knowledge in any medical sphere. Besides, such new specialties as “General Practitioner” (Family Doctor) are being developed. Faculty graduates have the right to work as managers of medical and organizational in medical units. Due to the high demand for the medical personnel, graduates are being looked for not only in medical establishments of the Irkutsk region but also far beyond the city.

Spheres of professional activities of medical faculty graduates are presented by the Governing bodies of medical and therapeutic services, various medical institutions of different levels and research institutions.
Being graduated with a degree of “doctor of the general medicine”, alumni are prepared solve different issues: working at the health care institutions, prevention and early detection of various diseases, provision of a qualified routine and emergency care, skills of determining the clinical diagnosis and the further treatment, engaging in scientific activities.
Enrollment status: a full-time form of studying, duration – 6 years, part-time – 7 years. After that, a graduate has to take an internship or clinical residency studies to obtain a specialist certificate. Those who intend to take up scientific activities of a clinical course are eligible to enter a Ph.D. program to write a thesis.

Educational process of the students majoring in “General Medicine” is conducted in accordance with the federal state educational standards. All students take session twice a year. On successful completion of the final state examination, a graduate receives his/her medical degree on 6 or 7 year of studying. During the whole period of studying, the student has a possibility to take up scientific researching work at the Scientific Foundation of Young Scientists and Students in any specialty. Annually, many of interregional and all-Russian student competitions on therapy, surgery, obstetrics and gynecology are held.
The university has a well-organized sport base along with the recreation camp. Also, there is a wide choice of activities: wit and humor competitions, vocal and music contests, beauty contests and other numerous entertainments. Broad international activity of the university provides an opportunity not only to learn foreign languages but also to take part in various internship programs in France, Germany, India, China, Mongolia, and Korea.
Student government is presented by the faculty monitors and students’ coordinating council. Students are able not only to solve their own issues, but also participate in the life of city and region student groups, cooperating with the university administration.
The process of education in the university is provided by the qualified personnel. The surgical departments are top-heavy with a corresponding member of AMS RF, 3 professors, 12 assistant professors; the obstetrics and gynecology departments are presented by 3 professors and assistant professors. At the department of general medicine is functioning the best students’ scientific circle.
Faculty’s personnel, in addition to educational activities, is working through scientific research on modern medicine features. Professor Grigoriev. E.G., head of the hospital surgery department, runs the Institute of Reconstructive and Restorative Surgery (Academy of Medical Sciences of the Russian Federation), being a chief surgeon of the Federal District. Almost all the major service areas of the city and region are led by the faculty’s personnel.
From the General Medicine Faculty were graduated such outstanding world-known professionals as Speranskiy A.D. (a member of the Academy of Science), Sedov K.R.(a member of the Academy of Science), professors Bykov K.M, Levit V.S., Sapozhkov K.P., Malinovskiy M.S., Melkih A.A., Fedorov L. N., Khodos Kh. G. and others, who are the prime examples of serving medicine and public health.
