The faculty of Public Health of ISMU was opened in 1930 and until 1992 was named as the Faculty of Sanitary and Hygiene.
After completion of the studies, the graduates receive a degree in “Medical and Preventative Care”.
Faculty of the Irkutsk State Medical University provides training of such highly qualified specialists for further working in the field of preventive medicine as hygienists, epidemiologists, and bacteriologists. Such an approach becomes particularly topical in modern society when the issues of sanitary and epidemiological welfare of the population require a qualitatively new way of training.
The spheres where the graduates of “Public Health” faculty can perform their activities are the following: sanitary and epidemiological administrating authorities, sanitary and epidemiological institutions and organizations, health units, research institutes and organizations of sanitary, epidemiological and microbiological profiles.
The graduates with the degree in “Medical and Preventative Care” are qualified in solving the following tasks: working in the system of organizations and institutions of sanitary, epidemiological and preventative care services, state estimation of health of the population, evaluation of environmental factors that influence the health of the population, organizing and implementation of sanitary and epidemiological control, mastering in clinical and epidemiological diagnosing, in basics of providing emergency medical care and prevention of particular diseases; pedagogical activity.
The full-time enrollment status in the Irkutsk State Medical University is included, duration of the courses – 6 years and 1 year of internship. Major specialities that are available for the further occupation by the graduates of “Public Health” faculty are the following: general hygiene doctor, children and adolescent hygiene doctor, environmental sanitation doctor, occupational hygiene doctor, radiation hygiene doctor, bacteriologist, virologist, doctor of disinfectology, parasitologist, epidemiologist, social hygiene doctor; sanitary-epidemiological laboratory studies.
The process of education in the Irkutsk State Medical University is carrying out according to the state educational standards and is based on the system of general, biomedical, clinical and preventive disciplines. It is determined by the fact of while not knowing the disease, its origin, and essentiality, it is impossible correctly to provide preventive services.
Qualified professional training carried out by the faculty is provided by the operational excellence of the higher-education teaching personnel. At the faculty of ISMU works 14 professors, and the overall rate of academics with a doctorate or Ph.D. degree comprises 80%. Over the years, the faculty personnel has been carrying out researches on the privileged direction that provides an opportunity to evaluate the health condition of the Eastern Siberia population.
Being graduated from the “Public Health” faculty of Medical University, students can get a second medical degree majoring in “General Medicine” or “Pediatrics”, eliminating the difference in the curriculum during the next course.
There is an important point for student and their parents to know about the high demand for physicians of the preventive trend. Over the last 5 years, the need in such specialists in 3-4 times exceeds the number of graduates of the Faculty of Public Health.
