History
Irkutsk State Medical University was opened on 26th of August 1919 as a medical department at the Physics and Mathematics Faculty of the Irkutsk State University. On 20th of January 1920, the medical department became a separate educational unit – the Medical Faculty of Irkutsk State University.
In 1921 at the Faculty of Medicine, the scientific medical society was organized. Not only members of the university but also practitioners of the city and region could participate there. In 1923, the first edition of “Irkutsk medical magazine” was published.
In 1936, the Institute gained the right to defend theses for the degree of candidate of medical and biological sciences. Certainly, it helped to speed up the process of preparation of certified staff.
In 1952, “ISMU” a faculty of dentistry was opened. It was formed after the merger of the Irkutsk Dental institute with Irkutsk State Medical Institute. In 1982, the pediatric faculty was opened.
In 1992, Irkutsk State Medical Institute passed the state certification to assess the quality of training which was held by State Inspectorate for certification of educational institutions of the Russian Federation’s State Committee for Higher Education. In 1995 Irkutsk State Medical Institute received the status of “university”.
In 1996, the university opened the Faculty of the Pre-University Tutorial that in 2008 gained the new name “Center of the Pre-University Tutorial”. In 1997, faculty of training and professional retraining of specialists was opened. In 2004 the faculty of “Management in Health Care, Medical Law, Medical Biochemistry” was introduced.
In 1997, 2002, 2007, and 2012 Irkutsk State Medical University passed attestation and state accreditation. As a result of attestation, ISMU confirmed its status “university”.
According to the decree of the government of Russian Federation of 23.10.2010, №395-p University is reorganized through joining of the federal state institution of the secondary vocational education “Irkutsk Medical School (College) with the following foundation of the Institute of nursing education based on the attached separate structural unit.
About 50 years Irkutsk State Medical University prepares specialists for foreign countries. Among Russian medical higher educational institutions, only seven institutions have such recognition. During this period, more than 25000 doctors are prepared for 35 countries of Asia, Far and the Middle East, Africa, Europe, and Latin America.
